Good question! It is true that some Christians hold such strong opinions that they are intolerant of others and this would make them a bigot according to the dictionary definition. However having strong opinions does not automatically mean that we cannot respect the opinion of others and the real Christian response is to win the right to be heard. Also it is not just Christians that can be bigoted. Some evolutionists are intolerant of those who think the world was created in 7 days and would quite happily write them off as wacky! Politician's can also be intolerant of those who think differently.
There is nothing wrong with having a friend who is gay, and God loves them in exactly the same way as those who are heterosexual (see John 3: 16 in the Bible). God loves all people regardless of race, gender or sexual orientation. Whilst there is some controversy in the Church today, most Christians feel that it is not God's best for them to be homosexual and that the will of God is for people to marry a person of the opposite sex. Whilst maintaining this viewpoint, it is however the responsibility of the Christian Church to provide love and support and to not be judgmental in any way (see Romans 2: 1 and Matthew 7: 1 in the Bible)
