Texas-based singer, songwriter and producer Sandifer has been making albums since 1981 so as one would expect, this is a neatly produced package. But it's much more than that. For a start, there is the quality of the lyrics. It's so refreshing to get away from the pervasive clichés and find genuinely original expressions. The theme of the project is stated to be "encouraging people to not just learn about God but to spend time with him in worship and at the table. He assures us he will meet us there." Track one gets right to the point with "To The Table" and introduces us to Phillip's enticing layers of vocal and instrumental sound. Every song has haunting arrangements, with memorable choruses and occasional striking instrumental solos. There are intimate prayers here, like "Meet Me There" and "All By Grace". The vocal style is intimate yet strong and the words express weakness and self-doubt, while looking to a confidence in God beyond. I appreciate the up-front bass line in numbers like "Build An Altar" and "The Best Imagination" and I love the country feel on "Old Love" with the folky violin. An inspiring album from a singer and songsmith who still has much to give the Church.
